The youngest of the five NCCL coffee estates in Zambia, Nsunzu is located at the foot of Mount Nsunzu, one of the biggest landmarks in Northern Zambia. The surrounding landscape makes this one of the most beautiful coffee estates in the world. The first full coffee crop from Nsunzu was harvested in 2020, and there is plenty of potential for further expansion of this coffee farm. Even though Nsunzu and the other estates have the ablity for mechanical coffee harvesting, they deliberately choose to harvest by hand. This labor-intensive process allows for a more careful selection of only the reddest cherries which maximizes the rich flavor profiles and provides higher quality control. In addition, NCCL as the largest coffee employer in the country remains committed to providing employment in a region where sources of paid labor are extremely scarce.
In addition to the estate operating with the type of high standards we look for in a producer, this coffee is a high quality AA size coffee, and it’s Rainforest Alliance Certified. AA indicates a high-quality, large-sized bean; often this leads a denser more flavorful coffee with more aromatic oils.
