At Finca San Rafael, a third-generation coffee producer, Don Gerson, is bringing innovative new techniques and coffees to his family’s legacy coffee farm. Located outside of Huehuetenango, Finca San Rafael sits on a beautiful mountainside area with dramatic volcano-shaped mountains, deep valleys, switchback red dirt roads, and lush forests.
In 2019, Don Gerson entered one of his Washed Anaerobic Gesha coffees into the Cup of Excellence and won 19th place. Prior to this honor, Don Gerson didn’t have an export license, but due to the excellence of that lot of coffee the process was expedited and Don Gerson was awarded his own export license. Now empowered with the ability to market and export his own coffee, Don Gerson has taken advantage of the opportunities to enter more lots into the cup of excellence. As a result, Finca San Rafael has begun building relationships with interested buyers in order to sustain the farm, Don Gerson’s family, and the surrounding community in Hoja Blanca.
