Coffee Spotlight: Papua New Guinea Korgua Estate
Let’s talk about our new coffee from Papua New Guinea on the blog this week in the newest edition of our coffee spotlight blog series!
This is quite the unique coffee! Sourcing coffee in Papua New Guinea comes with singular logistical, cultural, and linguistic challenges. The country's many indigenous populations are very distinct from one another in terms of custom and language, and communities often comprise only a few hundred people; because of these factors, the communication required to do business in PNG can be more difficult than in other coffee-growing regions.
The Korgua Estate in the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea was established to bridge these divides and ease the difficulty of doing business in the coffee industry here. Producer Brian Leahy established his Kuta Mill and Korgua Estate as a neutral ground, providing access to processing methods to other producers as well as to his own estate. It is now home to the best coffee production in PNG, and it supports the coffee businesses of producers from rival tribes without conflict.

This coffee is one of Brian Leahy’s own, and it is a great example of a high quality PNG coffee. In the cup, it tends to be fuller-bodied and creamier, with low to moderate acidity and a rich mouthfeel.

As we’ve said before, we love working with producers like this who are giving back to their community and supporting local farmers! Buying coffees from these types of producers is a practical way to support these communities and enjoy amazing direct trade coffees at the same time.
